  ഒരിക്കൽ ബാലചന്ദ്രൻ ചുള്ളിക്കാട് പറയുകയുണ്ടായി, മലയാള ഭാഷയെ പരിപോഷിപ്പിക്കാനോ മലയാള സാഹിത്യചരിത്രത്തിൽ സ്ഥാനം പിടിക്കാനോ അതുമല്ലെങ്കിൽ ഏതെങ്കിലും സാഹിത്യ ശാഖയുടെ മുൻനിര സ്ഥാനം അലങ്കരിക്കാനോ അല്ല താൻ കവിത എഴുതുന്നത്. മറിച്ച് തന്റെ സമാനമായ വേദന അനുഭവിക്കുന്ന വായനക്കാരന് വേണ്ടി മാത്രമാണ് തന്റെ കവിതകൾ. അവർ മാത്രം തന്നെ വായിച്ചാൽ മതി എന്ന നിര്ബന്ധ ബുദ്ധിയും അദ്ദേഹത്തിനുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ വായനകളും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ വാദങ്ങളെ സാധൂകരിക്കുന്നതാണ് എന്ന് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കവിതകളിൽ നിന്ന് നമുക്ക് മനസ്സിലാവും. ബാലചന്ദ്രൻ ചുള്ളിക്കാടിനെ വളരെയേറെ സ്വാധീനിച്ച ഒരു കവിയായിരുന്നു ചിലിയൻ ഇതിഹാസമായിരുന്ന പാബ്ലോ നെരൂദ. നെരൂദയുടെ കവിതകൾ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സാഹിത്യ സൃഷ്ടിയെ മാത്രമല്ല അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ചിന്താധാരകളെയും അങ്ങേയറ്റം സ്വാധീനിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. തന്റെ കവിതയിൽ അദ്ദേഹം നെരൂദയെക്കുറിച്ച് ഇങ്ങനെ കുറിക്കുന്നു.
